Vasseur to miss Saturday at Monaco GP after hospitalization

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has been hospitalized during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend and will remain under observation on Saturday.

Vasseur was working at the circuit throughout Friday and carried out media duties for the team after FP2, but will not be in attendance for qualifying on medical advice.

“Fred Vasseur will not be present at the circuit today,” the statement read. “Following some medical checks, Fred will remain under observation at a local medical facility. No further medical information will be provided.

“We wish Fred a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the track soon.”

In Vasseur’s absence, deputy team principal Jerome d’Ambrosio will take on overall responsibility for Ferrari decisions trackside.

The Monaco weekend is seen as one of Ferrari’s best chances to win a race so far this season, owing to the car’s strengths at low speed and over bumps and curbs, as well as the reduced emphasis on power unit performance around the tight and twisty circuit.

Ferrari topped both practice sessions on Friday in Monaco, with Charles Leclerc fastest from Lewis Hamilton in FP1, and then Hamilton leading his teammate in FP2, as Max Verstappen finished third in the classification on both occasions.
